The construction of the mosque was completed in 1983. The official opening of the mosque was made on April 21, 1984 and was attended by a state delegate, the mayors of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, and various civic and military leaders in the area. The Mosque was the first in the state of Virginia that had Islamic architecture.

The mosque serves as a spiritual and educational center for the Muslim community, and as a cultural center for the community at large.
In addition to the daily and
Friday prayers, the activities of
the mosque include weekend
Islamic school for the children;
weekly interactive multimedia
sessions to the youth and their
parents.
Civic and church groups;
schools and religion classes; and other nonMuslim groups attend Multimedia presentations
at the mosque on Islamic topics
of their choice.
